By Kirsten Griew

The John Knox house, located on the Royal Mile, is one of the oldest buildings in Edinburgh, dating back to 1490.

John Knox was the minister who almost single-handedly led the Reformation in Scotland in the 16th century - converting the population of practically the entire county from Roman Catholicism to Presbyterianism. He never quite managed to convert the royal family, however, and for this reason Knox was an archenemy of Mary Queen of Scots. Despite the name, it is now believed that Knox never actually lived in the house;
although it was the belief that he had lived there that saved the building and its neighbour, Mobery House (built in 1462, and still lived in) from demolition in the 19th century.

The house has been a museum to John Knox and James Mossiman (goldsmith to Mary Queen of Scots, and a true former resident) for a number of years, and still boasts original features. These include a wooden gallery, forestair and painted ceiling, and give a good indication of what Edinburgh's Old Town may have looked like in the later middle ages. The building sits next to the site of the old Netherbow Port - once the main gateway into the medieval city. Today it is connected to the Scottish Storytelling Centre, the first purpose built storytelling centre in the world. The centre has a theatre, hosting a variety of performances and events throughout the year, and a free exhibition on traditional and modern Scottish stories.
