Abbey House Gardens and its five acres of all season colour is
bounded by Malmesbury, where the Cotswolds meet the West Country.
The gardens
belonged to the once highly influential Benedictine Monastery.
In the past it grew herbs, fruit trees, and housed a vinery for
the local monks. Work for today’s gardens began in 1994
(Ian Pollard - designer of the present day gardens has attempted
to recreate the original atmosphere). The Abbey House Gardens
were completed in 
1996
when a full-time worker was employed for garden maintenance purposes.
One of the more significant
original features is the Saxon Arch, which still stands proudly
in its glorious isolation. A Celtic Cross garden design has been
created to augment the environment, although interestingly Pollard
was unaware of the Celtic design until it was nearly completed.
‘Dinosaur Grove’ in the gardens containing trees living
when the Dinosaurs lived, now planted up and a wealth of camellias
and hydrangeas. This is an area to watch with pleasure as it matures
over time and produces more and more colour.
