The picturesque fishing town of Aberaeron lies south of Aberystwyth
on the coast of Cardigan Bay in Ceredigion, mid-Wales. It was
one of Wales' first "planned" towns, a result of the
Reverend Alban Gwynne's decision in the 19th century to establish
a new port for mid-Wales at the mouth of the River Aeron.
While Aberaeron's
days as a thriving and prosperous ship-building port have passed,
the town has since become a yachting centre, with many sailing
boats moored in its pretty stone walled harbour.
Aberaeron's colourful seafront is matched by the rest of the town,
with pastel-coloured Georgian terraced houses and cottages lining
elegantly laid out wide streets and squares. There is a Sea Aquarium
on Quay Parade, and the town is also famous for its delicious
honey ice cream.
Inland, the
beautiful Aeron and Teifi valleys are great walking country, or
you can cycle along the old railway track to the mansion and walled
garden of Llanerchaeron, which lies a few miles east of Aberaeron.
Another exciting option is to take a boat trip and explore Ceredigion's
Maritime Heritage Coast - the first offshore conservation area
in the UK - which is famous for its dolphins, seals, porpoises
and seabirds.
