Aberglasney Gardens Photo Aberglasney Gardens lie between the towns of Llandeilo and Carmarthen in the beautiful Tywi Valley in Carmarthenshire, south Wales.

The gardens date from 1470 but were abandoned for centuries. The site is now in a process of restoration that began in 1995. Covering approximately 10 acres, with two areas of woodland, the formerly 'lost' gardens have many attractions, including an incredible 18th century Yew Tunnel, a pool garden, and a walled garden. Aberglasney Gardens Photo The centrepiece of the gardens is the serene cloister garden, where a restored Jacobean cloister with an arcaded parapet walkway provides wonderful views over the lovely surroundings. As well as the formal gardens, the wooded areas are filled with wild flowers and rhododendrons.

The derelict mansion at Aberglasney is also undergoing restoration, and is rumoured to be haunted. Its origin is obscure, although it was sold to different families from the 15th century onwards, and Bishop Rudd of St David's constructed a new building on the site of the old house at the beginning of the 17th century. The famous poet John Dyer lived in the house during the 18th and 19th centuries, and the poem 'Grongar Hill' refers to the hill overlooking the estate.
