Aberystwyth,
Mid-Wales, UK

Aberystwyth Photo The Victorian seaside resort and university town of Aberystwyth lies on the Cardigan Coast in Ceredigion. It is undoubtedly Mid-Wales' liveliest and most cosmopolitan town, boasting everything from a beautiful waterfront and gorgeous beaches, to the impressive National Library of Wales and the prestigious University College of Wales.

Culturally, Abersytwyth is very Welsh. The National Library has many literary treasures, including Wales' oldest Welsh manuscript,Aberystwyth Marina Photo while the Ceredigion Museum, housed in a restored Edwardian Coliseum, also has lots of interesting exhibits.

Lined with grand Victorian terraces, the seafront promenade runs south from Consitution Hill. You can travel to the hill's summit via a 1896 cliff railway - the largest in Britain - where a Camera Obscura offers amazing views of the coast and distant mountains. On a rocky promontory further south are the meagre remains of one of Edward I's castles. Backed by the Cambrian Mountains, Aberystwyth is a great base for exploring the countryside and coast of Ceredigion. For fantastic views, take a trip on the restored Vale of Rheidol Steam Railway, where you pass through the dramatic wooded ravines of the Rheidol Valley to the incredible 300ft plunging waterfalls at Devil's Bridge.
