Isle of Anglesey,
North Wales, UK

Isle of Anglesey Photo Separated from the mainland of North Wales by the Menai Strait, the Isle of Anglesey has an abundance of glorious scenery as well as many sacred historical sites. Most of the island's coastline is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with award-winning sandy beaches, pretty coves and estuaries, and lots of birds and wildlife.

Anglesey boasts a strong Welsh culture, and was renowned in the past for being the breadbasket of Wales due to its fertile soil (becoming known as the 'Mother of Wales').Menai Bridge Photo The island was the last stronghold of the ancient Celts and Druids, and has Wales' greatest concentration of prehistoric sites, including the Neolithic burial chambers of Bryn Celli Ddu and Barclodiad y Gawres. There are also many Stone Age and Roman remains on Holy Island's Holyhead Mountain.

Lying on the banks of the Menai Strait, the seaside town of Beaumaris is the location of Wales' famous Beaumaris Castle, part of Edward I's 'Iron Ring', while further south is Plas Newydd, the 18th century stately home of the Marquess of Anglesey. Holy Island lies northwest of the mainland, and Anglesey also has a village with the longest place name in Britain, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerych-wyrndrobwllllandysiliogogogoch (a tourist gimmick), which is shortened to Llanfair P.G.
