The Ardboe High Cross is one of the best preserved Celtic high crosses in the whole of Ulster. It is located in Ardboe, ten miles east of Cookstown, by the shore of Lough Neagh in the low-lying eastern part of County Tyrone.

Dating from the 10th century, and built of sandstone, the cross is a magnificent sight. It is the highest cross in Northern Ireland, and the third highest in Ireland, towering to a height of 18ft. 22 panels carved with biblical stories adorn the two sides of the cross. Scenes from the Old TestamentArdboe High Cross Photo can be seen on the eastern face, with depictions of Adam and Eve, while the less weathered western face features scenes from the New Testament. Sadly the carving has eroded over the centuries, leaving the images hard to decipher.

The cross stands at the entrance to a graveyard in the grounds of what was once a 6th century monastery, founded by St Colman. The monastery was destroyed by fire in the 12th century, and the ruined church on the site today dates from the 17th century. The name 'Ard Boe' means 'hill of the cow', and derives from a bizarre legend claiming that the monastery of Ardboe was built from the milk of a magic cow that came out of Lough Neagh.
