The Argory, Northern Ireland
The Argory, Northern Ireland
The Argory is a neoclassical 19th century mansion that lies close to the town of Moy, in the far northwest of County Armagh.

Built in the 1820's for Walter McGeough, the house is set in a beautiful 315-acre wooded estate overlooking the River Blackwater, and remains substantially unchanged. The interesting rooms contain a varied collection of family treasures, such as impressive Victorian and Edwardian furniture, paintings, books and clothes. Other period items include a unique cabinet barrel

organ dating from 1824 , which is still in working order.

Now owned by the National Trust, visitors can take a tour of the house, which retains its 19th century fittings, and, with no electricity, has been lit by the original acetylene gas plant in the stable yard since 1906. The outbuildings in the yard also contain a Victorian laundry room, and a coach house with carriages and a harness room. There are lovely woodland and riverside walks in the parkland that surrounds the house, and the formal gardens include a sundial rose garden that is beautiful in summer time. During summer, the Argory is host to a range of events. Ardress House is another attraction that lies nearby.
