County Armagh map
Armagh City,
County Armagh

Armagh Photo Lying in the middle of County Armagh, the graceful city of Armagh is one of the oldest settlements in Ireland, with a rich history. The city became a prestigious centre of monastic scholarship during the time of early Christianity, and is known as the country's ecclesiastical capital.

The main town is overlooked by two cathedrals that face each other on opposing hills. To the south, the Church of Ireland's St Patrick's Cathedral stands on the spot where St PatrickArmagh Photo established his first church in 445AD, while to the north are the neo-Gothic spires of St Patrick's Roman Catholic Cathedral. Archbishop Richard Robinson was responsible for the city's handsome Georgian architecture, and founded the Robinson public library in 1771, which is famous for its collection of early Irish books.

In the centre of town, St Patrick's Trian is an interpretative centre tracing the history of Armagh back to pre-Christian times, while the Mall is a rectangular green (once the city's racecourse) with a courthouse at one end and a gaol at the other, flanked to the east by the Armagh County Museum. Founded in 1790, the Observatory stands along with the Planetarium on College Hill to the north, while to the south, in the grounds of the old Archbishop's Palace, the Palace Stables Heritage Centre provides a vibrant insight into 18th century life. The ancient site of Navan Fort lies just two miles west of the city.
