Southern Scotland location map
Ayrshire,
Southern Scotland

Culzean CastleAlthough much of Ayrshire consists of farmland pastures, the region has many beaches along the Clyde coast, and is also within close proximity to the stunning Southern Hebridean island of Arran to the west.

Ayrshire is most famous for the magnificent 18th century Culzean Castle, designed by the famous Scottish architect Robert Adam and set within a country park of over 500 acres. Perched spectacularly on a cliff-top overlooking the Firth of Clyde with views over to

the Isle of Arran, the neoclassical mansion is noted for the beautiful design of its elegant oval staircase and the circular rooms of its tower.

You can visit the birthplace of the legendary Scottish poet Robert Burns in Alloway, near Ayr, where the Kirk Alloway and the Auld Brig O'Doon inspired parts of Tam O' Shanter. There are also other ruins in the Ayrshire region, including Dundonald Castle, built in the 1370s and residence of the early Stewart kings, the late 13th century remains of Loch Doon Castle, and on the edge of a desolate cliff, the ruinous 16th century Greenan Castle. Other places of interest include Ayrshire's famous golf courses in Turnberry, Troon and Prestwick, or if you are interested in Scotland's maritime history the Maritime Museum in Irvine has lots of nautical exhibits, with different kinds of floating vessels moored along the harbour.
