Wales location map
Bala,
North Wales, UK

Bala Photo Situated by the Dee Valley southwest of Llangollen, Bala is a small town on the shores of Llyn Tegid, Wales' largest natural lake. Surrounded by the Berwyn Mountains to the west, and not far from Southern Snowdonia in the north, the town is a good base for exploring the landscape of both Mid and North Wales.

There is only one main street in the town, but the reason most people come to Bala is for the watersports, which are a popular activity on the lake due to the high winds sweeping through the mountain valley.Bala Lake Railway Photo By the edge of the lake there is a centre which provides equipment and runs courses for sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. There is also a whitewater rafting centre nearby on a stretch of the River Treweryn.

You can take a 4-mile trip on the steam-powered narrow-gauge Bala Lake Railway, which runs from Llanuwchllyn to Bala along the lake's shores, or take a walk around the lake itself. For more challenging hikes, the surrounding mountains - Aran Benllyn, the Berwyn, or Arenig Fawr - all offer scenic routes up to their summits. To the south of Bala in nearby Powys is Lake Vyrnwy, a picturesque lake that is a great base for walking in the foothills of the Berwyn Mountains. West of Bala, also in the Berwyns, is Wales' highest waterfall, the spectacular Pistyll Rhaedr.
