County Antrim map
Ballintoy,
County Antrim

Ballintoy Harbour Photo The small village of Ballintoy lies five miles west of Ballycastle on a particularly scenic stretch of the Causeway Coast in County Antrim.

The village has a lovely harbour, with lots of moored boats in the summer. Just offshore are Sheep Island and Carrick-a-Rede Island. Sheep Island is a small, rocky habitat for many different sea birds; including puffins, razorbills, kittiwakes and Ireland's largest colony of cormorants. Carrick-a-Rede Island lies further east, and is even smaller,Whitepark Bay Photo but very well known due to its famous rope bridge. You can rent boats for angling or sightseeing along the coast from local fishermen at Ballintoy harbour, and in summer you can take a boat trip past Sheep Island to Carrick-a-Rede.

On a hill above the harbour is a small white church from where there are great views over the surrounding coast. A footpath leads west from Ballintoy along the coastline to the beautiful, sweeping sandy beach of Whitepark Bay. St Gobban's church at nearby Portbradden is said to be the smallest church in Ireland. You can also walk east to the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge across the Larrybane sea cliffs, which are home to masses of sea birds.
