Wales location map
Bangor,
North Wales, UK

Bangor Photo The historic university and cathedral city of Bangor lies on the banks of the Menai Strait in North Wales. Close to both Snowdonia National Park and en route to the Isle of Anglesey, Bangor is ideally placed as a base from which to explore the wonderful landscapes of the northwest.

Bangor grew around a 6th century monastery and is one of Wales' oldest cities. Cosmopolitan in outlook, culturally diverse and strongly Welsh, it is also home to the University of Wales, and becomes packed with students during term time.University of Wales Photo The university sits on a ridge overlooking the town, and the main building was modelled on Bangor Cathedral, parts of which date back to the 12th century. The cathedral is situated down in the city centre, and was built on the site of the monastic settlement from which the town got its name, 'bangor' meaning 'protective fence'.

Near the cathedral is the Bangor Museum and Art Gallery, while Telford's elegant suspension bridge can be seen from Bangor's ornate Victorian pier, which stretches far out into the Menai Strait halfway across to Anglesey. Overlooking the coast to the east of Bangor is Penrhyn Castle, a resplendent mock-medieval stately home with luxurious decorations and expansive gardens.
