Wales location map
Barmouth,
North Wales, UK

Barmouth Photo The picturesque seaside resort of Barmouth is set in one of the most scenic locations in Wales at the mouth of the magnificent Mawddach mountain estuary on the west coast. The town is surrounded by the mountains of Southern Snowdonia, and fringed by golden sands which stretch along Cardigan Bay.

A popular holiday spot in Victorian times, Barmouth has a large beach and a beautiful harbour, as well as some fantastic walks. To the east, the Panorama Walk leads along the cliffs Mawddach Estuary Photooverlooking the town, from where there are spectacular views of the estuary, coast and mountains. The Mawddach estuary is one of the most attractive spots on the Cambrian coast, and is a haven for birdlife, with two RSPB reserves in the valley.

Crossing over Barmouth's bridge, the Mawddach Trail runs 15km along a disused railway track south of the estuary to Dolgellau, passing through a rich variety of woodlands and wetlands. For a scenic trip that doesn't involve walking you can catch the ferry across the estuary to Penrhyn Point, from where you can ride on the Fairbourne and Barmouth Steam Railway which is a two-mile trip along the coast to the small village of Fairbourne. Alternatively you can walk to Fairbourne and catch the train and ferry back to Barmouth.
