Stone Circles

Dunnamore, Co. Tyrone,
N. Ireland, UK.

Beaghmore Stone Circles Photo The Beaghmore Stone Circles form one of the most extensive megalithic sites in Northern Ireland. They lie on the southeast perimeter of the Sperrin Mountains, northwest of Cookstown and just north of the hamlet of Dunnamore, in County Tyrone.

The site is thought to date from the early Bronze Age, from around 1600BC, and consists of seven stone circles - six of which stand in pairs - and many round cairns and stone row alignments. Although the stones are lessBeaghmore Stone Circles Photo than a metre high, the large plan of the elaborate complex compensates for the diminutive scale of the stones themselves. The function of the site is unclear, although an astronomical connection could be inferred by the fact that three of the rows point to sunrise at the summer solstice.

The stones were first uncovered under a thick layer of peat between 1945-49, and the site was excavated again in 1965. It is believed that even more stones remain hidden in the surrounding peat. Evidence of field structures predating the erection of the circles and cairns suggests earlier Neolithic occupation. Although the purpose of the stones at Beaghmore may never be known, the site is compelling, while the exposed hilltop location affords wonderful views over the surrounding countryside.
