Beaumaris,
North Wales, UK |
|
The pretty seaside resort and historic town of Beaumaris sits
on the Menai Strait in Anglesey, North Wales. The last battle
of the English Civil war was fought there, and the town is the
site of the awe-inspiring Beaumaris Castle, the last of the fortresses
built by Edward I as part of his 'Iron Ring' of defences in the
13th century.
The castle
now has World Heritage status, while the town itself, which was
Wales's leading port during the 18th century, has retained its
maritime roots and become a popular yachting centre.
With attractive Georgian architecture and stunning views of the
mountains of Snowdonia from its sea front, Beaumaris makes a great
base for exploring Anglesey and North Wales.
If sailing
isn't your thing, you can take a cruise to nearby Puffin Island
for some bird and seal watching. As well as its castle, the town
contains many other notable historical buildings. Beaumaris Courthouse
dates from 1614 and is the oldest active court in Britain, while
the 19th century gaol offers a glimpse into Victorian prison life.
Beaumaris is also host to an annual summer Arts Festival, with
music, theatre and poetry events.
