Beaumaris Castle Photo Lying on the shores of the Menai Strait on the Isle of Anglesey in north Wales, Beaumaris Castle was the last fortress built by Edward I as part of his 'Iron Ring'.

The building of the castle began in 1295 with military architect Master James of St George in charge. The architectural design is regarded as being technically perfect, with the level ground enabling a concentric, symmetrical layout that would have been virtually impossible for invaders to penetrate.Beaumaris Castle Photo Elaborate layers of defence were created by an inner ring guarded by an outer circuit of walls, which were protected by a moat.

Sadly Beaumaris Castle was never fully completed, as funds ran out, and the great plans were never brought to fruition. Despite its sophisticated design and impregnability, the castle never saw any battles. Today the unfinished masterpiece is a World Heritage Site. Surrounded by a moat and parkland, with the mountains of Snowdonia as a backdrop, the castle is beautifully located, with a handsome rather than imposing look. The inner ward, lined by six towers, covers a vast area, and it is possible to walk through the maze of the castle's inner passageways. In the chapel tower is an exhibition on the castles of Edward I.
