Beddgelert Photo The pretty mountain village of Beddgelert, once a mining town, lies at the meeting point of the rivers Colwyn and Glaslyn in Snowdonia National Park. Surrounded by wooded vales and mountain lakes, it is an excellent base for walking in the Snowdonia region, with majestic mountain passes offering stunning views.

The creator of Rupert the Bear, Alfred Bestall, lived in Beddgelert and was inspired by the beauty of the place. Just south of the village, the River Glaslyn tumbles through the sheer cliffs of theAberglaslyn Pass Photo picturesque Aberglaslyn Pass, with scenic walks along the riverside and the old West Highland Railway track. North of the village, Beddgelert Forest has many waymarked trails, and is great for mountain biking.

Heading northeast from Beddgelert, you can follow the route of the River Glaslyn through the Nant Gwynant Valley, which winds through the mountains passing two beautiful lakes called Llyn Dinas, where there is an ancient hillfort, and Llyn Gwynant. A mile up the valley the Sygun Copper Mine, dating from Roman times, has some amazing stalactite and stalagmite formations in its underground caves. Beddgelert's name means 'Gelert's Grave', which derives from a legend about Prince Llywelyn's faithful hound called Gelert who was slain by Llywelyn when he was mistakenly believed to have killed the prince's missing child, whom the dog had actually saved from a wolf.
