Just south of Hyde Park, Belgravia is one of the most beautiful
areas in London. The local architecture cries beauty and class
and stems form a period where wealth was overtly displayed in
the character of one’s home.
Although it
has no administrative area, and therefore no official boundaries,
it is usually described as from Knightsbridge in the north, (home
of the world famous Harrods department store) to Pimlico Road
in the south. Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marques of Westminster, once
owned
most of the area. He is largely responsible for the synonymous
formal English architecture feel – grandiose white terraces
and upstanding local town squares.
For those who prefer
a alcoholic beverage, Belgravia has a popular selection of traditional
pubs. The Grenadier Pub, for example, although well hidden away
is popular with many. It is so named because the Duke of Wellington's
Grenadier Guards used to use it as their mess. The walls are covered
in artefacts that relate to the military and include a bearskin.
It is said that a ghost still resides there from an officer who
was bludgeoned to death for cheating at cards.
