Betws-y-Coed Photo Betws-y-Coed, once a Victorian artists' colony, is the main village of Snowdonia National Park, and lies twelve miles east of Snowdon by the gorges of the River Conwy and the River Llugwy. Its name means 'Chapel in the Wood' and the surrounding woodland and valleys, overshadowed by the nearby peaks of Snowdonia, provide stunning scenery for walking.

The Gwydyr Forest Park on the northwest edge of the town has many trails running through it, with facilities for mountain biking and pony trekking.Pont-y-Pair Bridge Photo A scenic lake, Llyn Elsi, lies inside the forest, or you can follow the River Lugwy past the southern edge of the forest park to a beautiful plunging waterfall called Swallow Falls. The Conwy Falls and the rapids in the wooded narrow ravine known as Fairy Glen are also close by, and can be reached by foot from the town.

In the village of Betws-y-Coed itself there is a Railway Museum with a miniature railway and a 14th century church known as St Michael's. There are also many bridges nearby, including Thomas Telford's intricately decorated cast iron Waterloo Bridge, which was constructed in 1815. Two miles from Betws-y-Coed, past Conwy Falls, is the Capel Garmon Neolithic Burial Chamber, a 5000-year old site near a small village of the same name which has fantastic views of Snowdonia.
