Black Mountains,
Mid-Wales, UK

Black Mountains Photo The Black Mountains lie in the east of Brecon Beacons National Park. Fringed by the River Usk and the English border, they contain some beautifully peaceful and isolated stretches of countryside.

Good bases for exploring the region include the small villages of Crickhowell and Tretower, and the pleasant market town of Abergavenny. Tretower is the site of the remains of Tretower Court and Castle, while Crickhowell lies on the banks of the River Usk, and is overlooked by Table Mountain.Llanthony Priory Photo Abergavenny is situated in the Wye Valley further southeast, and has a range of attractions. Surrounding the town are Sugar Loaf Mountain, Blorenge, and Skirrid Fawr, all of which have fantastic views from their summits.

North of Abergavenny is the lovely Vale of Ewyas, where the secluded medieval ruins of Llanthony Priory, an Augustine priory dating from the beginning of the 12th century, are situated. Even further north, on the border between Wales and England beneath the foothills of the Black Mountains, is the attractive small town of Hay-on-Wye, the book capital of Britain. The Vale of Ewyas is wonderful for walking, and is skirted by Offa's Dyke Path, which runs all the way to Wales' North Coast.
