Bodmin and Wenford Railway is Cornwall's only 'standard gauge' railway still operated by steam locomotives.
The railway
line passes through some delightful Cornish scenery and is typical
of a branch line in the 1950's. The main locomotives to be seen
here are Great Western Steam engines, although diesel traction
engines are also used - particularly at the weekend. Bodmin General
is the main station on the line, where the engine sheds are to
be found. There is also a souvenir shop within the
restored station buildings. Boscarne Junction provides a direct
link with the 'Camel Trail', the cycle and footpath running along
to the picturesque costal town of Padstow along the route of the
old Bodmin and Wadebridge Railway.
For small
groups who want to try something very different, a special train
can be hired consisting of up to 3 goods train brake vans, each
of which can carry up to 15 passangers. There are open verandas
and basic seating, so for such a traditional experience it shouldn't
be expected to be too comfortable! The railway is also willing
to arrange a barbecue or pasty lunch, which can be served during
the trip.
