Bodnant Garden is one of the finest gardens in Wales. Lying eight
miles south of Llandudno and Colwyn Bay on the north coast, it
covers 80 acres in the Conwy Valley and has magnificent views
over to the nearby Snowdonia mountains.
The garden
was begun in 1875 and is now managed by the National Trust. Masses
of flowers from all over the world flourish at Bodnant, and visitors
have the option of exploring the garden's two different sections.
The upper part lies around Bodnant Hall (which is not open to
the public)
and
consists of large Italianate terraces and smooth lawns,
with lovely herbaceous borders, water lilies, roses and climbing
plants. The lower part is known as the 'Dell', and contains a
wild garden. It covers the steep wooded valley of the River Hiraethlyn,
a tributary of the River Conwy, and can be viewed at various points
from the gardens above.
There are
spectacular colours at Bodnant all year round. In spring the rhododendrons,
magnolias and camellias are beautiful, while the 55m Laburnum
Arch blooms in late May, creating a dazzling yellow tunnel that
is one of the garden's most stunning features.
