Dee Valley Photo The North Wales borderlands stretch from Snowdonia National Park in the west to the English border in the east. The area encompasses some beautiful countryside, from the heather-clad Clwydian hills to the lush Dee Valley and lovely Ceiriog Valley in the south.

In the Dee Valley is the town of Llangollen, famous for being the venue of the International Musical Eisteddfod and popular with holiday-makers all year round. Two miles north of Llangollen in a beautiful pastoral settingValle Crucis Abbey Photo are the medieval ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey. With a history of turbulence due to its frontier position, the area contains many other places of historic interest, from ancient hillforts to the castles of Rhuddlan, Flint, Denbigh, Dinas Bran and the Marcher fortress of Chirk.

South of the seaside resorts along Wales' north coast the impressive National Portrait Gallery is housed in Bodelwyddan Castle, and further east, near the town of Wrexham, is the much-visited Erddig Hall. The tiny city of St Asaph is home to Britain's smallest cathedral, while the sacred waters of Holywell by the Dee Estuary have attracted pilgrims since the seventh century. Near Wrexham, the Clywedog Trail offers an insight into the old iron and lead mines of the area.
