National Botanic Garden Wales Photo The National Botanic Garden of Wales was opened recently in May 2000, and lies in the former regency park of Middleton Hall in the scenic Tywi Valley in Carmarthenshire, south Wales.

The garden was set up for the conservation of threatened plant species and to provide a compelling insight into the natural world. Inspired by the contours of the surrounding hills, the futuristic Great Glasshouse is the garden's centrepiece. The amazing structure was designed by Norman FosterNational Botanic Garden Photo and is the largest single span glasshouse in the world, measuring 95m long and 55m wide. Containing ravines, waterfalls and lakes, it houses plants from all corners of the globe that flourish in a Mediterranean climate. There is also an outside Mediterranean Garden that lies on a south-facing slope not far from the Great Glasshouse.

The Broadwalk contains one of Europe's longest herbaceous borders and forms the main path through the garden. Many parts of the garden are designed to be educational, such as the Wallace Garden, which examines plant breeding and genetics, and the Double Walled Garden, which charts the evolutionary history of flowering plants. In the Apothecaries Garden you will find herbal plants from all around the world, while the award-winning Japanese Garden is a perfect spot for some Zen meditation.
