Lying on the banks of the River Usk on the northern edge of the
Brecon Beacons National Park is the ancient market town of Brecon.
The town's
narrow streets and riverside promenade are lined with elegant
Georgian buildings, while the surrounding mountainous landscape
forms a breathtaking backdrop. Brecon makes a good base for walks
within the national park, and is renowned for its world famous
annual jazz festival held over a weekend in August every year
- one of the largest musical gatherings in the world. The town
has a Jazz Gallery and is home to the Brecknock Museum, which
houses a collection ranging from Roman artefacts to Welsh lovespoons.
Brecon's cathedral
has an interesting history and dates mostly from the 13th and
14th centuries, although some of the original Norman details remain.
A few miles outside the town is the Brecon Beacons Mountain Centre,
where you will find information about the national park. The Taff
Trail walking and cycling route winds south to Cardiff and begins
in Brecon. For a more relaxing experience, you can take a boat
trip on the Monmouth and Brecon Canal, which passes by the outskirts
of the town.
