Brecon Beacons Photo Located 25 miles north of Cardiff and covering the southernmost part of Powys is the Brecon Beacons National Park: 520 sq miles of spectacular mountainous terrain, rounded hills, cascading waterfalls and deep caves, as well as many species of wildlife and birds.

The park stretches from Llandeilo in the west to Hay-on-Wye in the east, encompassing the narrow valleys of the remote Black Mountains on the English border, the central Beacons themselves,Black Mountains Photo the rugged wilderness of Fforest Fawr in the west, and the isolated Black Mountain (not part of the Black Mountains). The area is perfect for walking, cycling, mountain biking, pony trekking, canoeing and fishing, and there are also many ancient ruins and attractive towns and villages.

The towns of Brecon, Abergavenny, Hay-on-Wye, and the village of Crickhowell all make good bases for exploring the national park. Southwest of Brecon among the central Brecon Beacons is the Brecon Beacons Mountain Centre, a great starting point for walks with breathtaking views of Pen y fan, the highest mountain in South Wales at 2907ft. Fforest Fawr in the west is home to vast caves and waterfalls, while there are some beautifully isolated areas around the remote Black Mountains in the east, particularly the Vale of Ewyas on the banks of the Honddu River.
