The Brecon Mountain Railway is a narrow-gauge steam railway running
from Pant, three miles north of Merthyr Tydfil in the valleys
of south Wales, into the Brecon Beacons National Park.
The journey
is 3½ miles long and covers part of the trackbed of the
former Brecon and Merthyr Railway. The train descends as it heads
through the valley and then alongside the picturesque Taf Fechan
reservoir at the foot of the Brecon Beacons. Although the rounded
summits of the Brecon Beacons
are
not as majestic as the snow-capped peaks of Snowdonia in north
Wales, the
views are spectacular, and Ponsticill station offers an opportunity
to go for a stroll and take in the scenery before the train reaches
its terminus at Dol-y-Gaer.
At Pant there
is a viewing area where visitors can look at the workshops and
find out how the old steam locomotives are repaired. There are
also tearooms, a souvenir shop, and a scenic picnic area which
has wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. There are
plans to extend the line much further into the national park in
the future.
