Like many costal towns in the UK, Bristol originally gained significance
from its usefulness as a port, initially trading goods, and latterly
during the industrial revolution.
However, by
the late 19th century competition from the likes of Glasgow and
Liverpool meant that locals couldn’t rely on the sea for
their survival. A large part of Bristol’s architectural
appeal stems from one of its most famous citizens – Isambard
Kingdom Brunel. As well as designing the world’s first large
iron ship which was driven by a modern propeller,
Brunel was also famous for designing both the Clifton Suspension
Bridge and Bristol Temple Meads railway station.
The modern Bristol
is evolving quickly. The harbour area, largely abandoned for many
years has morphed into one of the UK’s most attractive city
centre areas covered in bars, restaurants, museums and art galleries
while the West End – the area of the city that can be found
between the city centre and Clifton is still a traditional haven
of Georgian architecture, parks and theatre. (Home to the Bristol
Hippodrome)
