The British Empire and Commonwealth Museum presents a 500-year history of Britain’s worldwide empire and the resulting legacy for all parties concerned.

The museum is housed inside the impressive structure of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's 19th century railway station – Temple Meads in Bristol. Brunel’s designs often impacted the industrial revolution, which started in Britain. The museum location therefore pays a fitting homage to a significant building that aided the growth of the British Empire, providing a useful connection between Britain’s overseas colonies, London and America.

The still image archive within the British Empire and Commonwealth museum houses over 2 million images and includes images from around 1860 to the present day. Key areas of focus include agriculture, architecture, domestic life, politics and royal events. Many hours of 16mm film are also housed, with a special feature on amateur filmmakers in Africa and India. The museum are continually adding to their collection with a view to documenting in as much detail as possible the rise and fall of the British Empire.
