Wales, UK.

Bryn Celli Ddu Photo Bryn Celli Ddu, meaning the Mound in the Dark Grove, is one of the most famous and best preserved prehistoric burial chambers in Wales. It is situated on the Isle of Anglesey in north Wales, not far from Beaumaris.

The site has a varied history, beginning life as a Neolithic circle henge (the ditch within the stone circle is still visible), and then undergoing transformation into a chambered burial mound during the beginning of the Bronze Age. The mound has been restored,Bryn Celli Ddu Photo although the original would probably have been slightly bigger than the mound that is there today. Having being plundered in the 17th century, the site was excavated in the 19th century and 20th centuries. A small human ear bone covered with a flat stone dating from the Neolithic period was uncovered, along with other human bones, arrowheads and mussel shells.

The remains are atmospheric, with a long dark and narrow passageway stretching for 27ft and opening out into the 8ft wide main burial chamber, where a striking stone stands. The pillar at the entrance to the tunnel is a replica, with the original carved stone standing in the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff.
