Caerleon Roman Fortress
Caerleon, Gwent, NP18 1AE, Wales, UK.
Tel. 44 (0)1633 422518

Caerleon Photo Caerleon was once the site of the Roman fortress of Isca, and is located three miles north of Newport in south Wales.

Occupying 50 acres, with four entrances, the site incorporates some fascinating and well preserved remnants of Roman barracks, baths, and an amphitheatre; and is also reputed to be the location of King Arthur's Camelot. Sections of the Roman fortress wall still survive, measuring over 3m in places, and you can walk along the path that runs on top of the wall's Caerleon Photo southern corner. Caerleon is also home to the only remains of Roman legionary barrack blocks on view in Europe.

In 1926 excavations were begun to uncover the amphitheatre, which lies just outside the walled area. It is thought to date from around 90AD and is the best preserved of its kind in the UK. Comprising a circular earthwork that encases a hollow, the amphitheatre would once have seated around 6000 people, and is also believed to be a prototype of King Arthur's Round Table. Nowadays the amphitheatre is used for open-air events. Other remains include the Roman Baths, which are particularly atmospheric, while the Legionary Museum is filled with many artefacts that have been excavated from the site over the years.
