Caernarfon,
North Wales, UK

Caernarfon Castle Photo Lying on the Menai Strait on the north coast of Wales, just above Snowdonia National Park, is the medieval walled town of Caernarfon. The town's atmospheric narrow cobbled streets encircle the mighty Caernarfon Castle, the largest and strongest of Edward I's 'Iron Ring' of fortresses, which is now a World Heritage Site.

Given that Welsh nationalism is strong in the area, it is ironic that Caernarfon is historically symbolic of English dominance over Wales.Caernarfon Photo Edward I chose Caernarfon Castle as the birthplace of his son, the first Prince of Wales, in 1283, and it was the venue for Prince Charles' investiture in 1969, an event which sparked protest.

The castle is the town's main attraction, offering superb views from its ramparts and also housing exhibitions and displays within its battlements. Caernarfon's medieval town walls, which stretch down to the harbour beside the castle, stand almost complete, strengthened by eight towers and two twin towered gateways. With both Snowdonia and the Isle of Anglesey nearby, there is no shortage of places to visit in the area surrounding the town. Caernarfon is also home to the excavated ruins of Segontium, one of the largest Roman military forts in North Wales, and the narrow-gauge Welsh Highland Railway, currently in the process of restoration.
