Caldey Island,
South Wales, UK |
|
Caldey Island is situated three miles off the magnificent south
Pembrokeshire coastline, near Tenby, in south Wales. The island
is a 20-minute boat ride from Tenby Harbour, and has been a centre
of Celtic Christianity ever since a monastery was established
there in the 6th century.
A place of
peace and tranquillity, Caldey Island is home to many grey seals
and sea birds, as well as a modern Cistercian Monastery and the
old 12th century Priory. It is a lovely place for walking,
and a trip to the lighthouse is rewarded with panoramic views.
You can also swim in the waters around Priory Bay. The village
Post Office is a museum, with exhibits on the island's history,
and there is a shop in the village selling homemade perfume made
by the monks.
Caldey Island
also has two medieval churches: St Illtud's and St David's. St
David's is the island's parish church, and sits on the site of
a pre-Christian Celtic burial ground on a small hill above the
village. Parts of the building supposedly date from the 6th century,
although the beautiful stained glass windows were added as recently
as the early 1900's.
