Canary
Wharf,
London Docklands |
|
The
early 1960’s saw the peak periods for the London Docklands,
when they regularly handled up to 60 million tons of cargo each
year.
However, by
the 1970’s, globalisation and modern technology meant that
the volume of space dedicated to the shipping industry at the
Docklands, and the requirement for many local people to be employed
there slowly ebbed away. After the West India and Millwall docks
were finally closed, the London Docklands Development Corporation
was set up to
secure
local regeneration by reusing the existing facilities that could
be reused and adding whatever was required in order to rejuvenate
the area.
The Canary Wharf estate,
which has grown out of the area covers over 86 acres and more
than 60,000 people live and work there. There area now consists
of 10 stunning office buildings, a multi-level shopping experience
and the Docklands light railway. In addition, Canary Wharf is
now home to some of the most exclusive theatrical events and restaurants,
proving that redevelopment if done correctly – although
completely changing the physical aspect of the area – doesn’t
necessarily have to rip out its heart and soul as well.
