Capel Garmon Burial Chamber
Nr Betws-y-Coed, Gwynedd, Wales, UK.

Capel Garmon Photo The prehistoric burial chamber of Capel Garmon sits perched high on a ridge above the Conwy Valley near Betws-y-Coed in Snowdonia, north Wales.

The chambered long cairn dates from 1500BC, and was the communal burial tomb of generations of people. The west facing entrance of today was not the original entrance (which was on the south side), but was constructed in the 19th century when the tomb was used as a stable. The long barrow has three chambers, Capel Garmon Photo although the massive surviving capstone (measuring 14ft) is the only remnant of the original roof.

The site has been extensively excavated, and a first century wrought iron firedog that was uncovered in 1852 is now on display in the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff. It was found by a man digging a ditch on the nearby farm and is believed to have been an offering to a pagan god. Although the chamber of Capel Garmon is not as famous as Anglesey's Bryn Celli Ddu, the surroundings are some of the most beautiful in Wales, with the mountains, forests and glens of Snowdonia National Park forming a wonderful backdrop to the mysterious spot.
