Cardiff Civic Centre Photo Lying on Wales' south coast, Cardiff is the largest city in Wales and has been the country's capital city since 1955.

The growth of the coal valleys in the 19th century transformed Cardiff into the country's busiest port, and the city is now a lively, cosmopolitan place, filled with a wealth of interesting buildings and attractions. Perhaps most famous is the hugely impressive Millennium Stadium which was completed in 1999 and lies on the banks of the River Taff near the city centre.Millennium Centre Photo Also in the heart of the city is the splendid Cardiff Castle. Next to the Civic Centre in elegant Cathay's Park, the National Museum of Wales houses a vast array of fascinating exhibitions.

The recently redeveloped Cardiff Bay is home to the National Assembly for Wales and Cardiff's new landmark performing arts building, the Millennium Centre. The rejuvenated waterfront is a lively spot for eating and drinking, while back in town the Victorian Arcades contain a variety of shops and pleasant cafes, and are great for browsing. North of the city centre is Llandaff Cathedral, which has an interesting architectural history. Also outside the central area - and not to be missed - is the open-air Museum of Welsh Life, housed in the grounds of St Fagan's Castle, a late 16th century manor house. Northeast of Cardiff is the fanciful hillside castle of Castell Coch, and further north towards the Valleys is the massive Caerphilly Castle.
