Carew Castle Photo Carew Castle is situated in a scenic location by the River Carew, lying just east of Pembroke in south Wales.

Developed from a medieval fortress to an Elizabethan manor, Carew Castle has undergone many modifications over the years. In the late 13th century the castle was rebuilt from an earlier Norman structure, fragments of which still remain. The drum towers, curtain walls, west range and chapel were added by Sir Nicholas Carew, and when it passed into the hands of Rhys ap ThomasCarew Castle Photo in the late 15th century it underwent lavish remodelling. In 1607 the castle was purchased and extensive repairs were carried out by Sir John Carew. The building sustained damage during the Civil War, and was abandoned at the end of the 17th century.

The castle is one of the most interesting and striking in south Wales. Overlooking a 23-acre millpond, the site is also home to a restored tidal mill, and at the entrance to the castle stands an 11th century Celtic cross covered in fine tracery. There is a walk around the grounds and a picnic area, with the romantic setting providing a pleasant spot to admire the castle's exterior. The castle is also a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its thriving bat population.
