Wales location map
Carmarthen,
South Wales, UK

Carmarthen Photo Carmarthen is the county town of the region of Carmarthenshire in south Wales. It lies in beautiful surroundings in the Tywi Valley, and is strongly Welsh, with the native language spoken in most places.

Prior to the Industrial Revolution, Carmarthen was the largest town in the country and was once of great strategic importance, probably being Wales' first medieval walled town (although nowadays few of the medieval traces remain). You can visit the ruins of the castle which once dominated the town,Carmarthen Castle Photo or the attractive 18th century Guildhall. St Peter's Church used to be the parish church for the whole of Carmarthen, and contains a collection of monuments.

Carmarthen was once a Roman settlement and, according to folk legend, was also the birthplace of the Arthurian magician, Merlin. The 13th century Black Book of Camarthen, a collection of Welsh folk tales (some of which are connected with the legend of Arthur), is regarded as the earliest surviving Welsh manuscript, and is currently on display in the National Library of Wales in Aberyswyth. The Carmarthenshire County Museum is housed in the Bishop's Palace at Abergwili to the east of Carmarthen, and has translations of the New Testament, as well as many artefacts and exhibits relating to the area's rich history.
