Wales location map
Carmarthenshire,
South Wales, UK

Tywi Valley Photo Flanked by the Brecon Beacons to the east and the Cambrian Hills to the north, Carmarthenshire lies west of Pembrokeshire in south Wales.

Known as the 'Garden of Wales', the county is dominated by green valleys, hills and gardens, as well as beautiful stretches of coast in the south. Within the lush Tywi valley that stretches between Camarthen and Llandovery are both the National Botanic Garden of Wales, and the gardens of Aberglasney, which are currently being restored following years of neglect.Pembrey beach Photo The Millennium Coastal Park overlooks the Gower Peninsula in the south and has a scenic walking and cycle path, as well a vast wetlands reserve for birds and wildlife.

Lying on the shores of Carmarthen Bay is the pretty seaside village of Laugharne, where Welsh poet Dylan Thomas lived and worked. The Pembrey Country Park near Kidwelly has an award-winning beach, while a few miles west of Laugharne are the Pendine Sands. Carmarthenshire also has many sites of historic interest. Kidwelly has an impressive castle, and the romantic ruins of south Wales' most famous castle, Carreg Cennen, lie close to Llandeilo. Dinefwr Castle and Newton House are also nearby. The county town of Carmarthen grew up around a Roman fort, and just outside the village of Pumsaint you can take an underground tour of the Roman Gold mine at Dolaucothi.
