Situated spectacularly high up on a rocky outcrop overlooking the valleys of Carmarthenshire in South Wales, a few miles southeast of Llandeilo, is Carreg Cennen Castle.

An ancient manuscript claims that a castle was initially built on the site by Sir Urien, a knight of King Arthur, although the stone ruins of today date from the 13th century when the castle was rebuilt by the English under Edward I. The castle was damaged when it was besieged by Welsh leader Owain Glyndwr at the beginning of the 15th century, and later during the Wars of the Roses when the Lancastrians sought refuge in the fortress. After their surrender it was destroyed by the Yorkists and fell into a ruinous state.

Towering 300 ft above the valley of the River Cennen, the isolated site commands magnificent views. An inner ward is protected by a partially remaining outer ward, and a barbican with pits and drawbridges is situated above the gatehouse. A vaulted passage on the edge of the precipitous crag descends steeply down to a dank, pitch-dark cave beneath the castle, a mysterious feature that was possibly used at one time as a well.
