Castle Coole Photo Castle Coole is a late 18th century neoclassical mansion lying just south of the town of Enniskillen in County Fermanagh.

The huge house, which is set in magnificent landscaped parkland, was designed by James Wyatt in the 18th century as a palatial lakeside home for the Earls of Belmore. Built in Portland stone, the elegant building was completed in 1798, and has been restored and maintained by the National Trust since 1951. Evidence of itsCastle Coole Photo symmetry is striking, and a guided tour enables visitors to appreciate the details of the richly decorated interiors. Sumptuous gilt Regency furnishings, intricate plasterwork, and scagliola columns designed by the Italian marble craftsman Bartoli enhance the opulence.

The state bedroom, which was decorated for a visit by King George IV in 1821 (although he never arrived, and the room remained unused), retains its original furnishings. Also of interest are the outbuildings, which include a servants' tunnel, stable yard and ice house. The sweeping garden overlooks a lake, Lough Coole, which is the habitat of the oldest non-migratory flock of greylag geese in the UK. The grounds cover 700 acres and contain large areas of ancient oak woodland, and are filled with lovely walks.
