Centre for Alternative Technology Photo The Centre for Alternative Technology is Europe's leading eco-centre and is located amid the hills of southern Snowdonia, three miles north of Machynlleth in mid-Wales.

Visitors arrive at the beautiful seven-acre display section by travelling 180ft up the valley in a water powered funicular railway. The views of the surrounding mountains are breathtaking, and the cliff railway is one of the steepest in the world. The centre was built on the site of a disused slate quarry, and is filled withCentre for Alternative Technology Photo working examples of alternative technology and environmental sustainability.

There are many interactive displays that demonstrate how to make use of different types of renewable energy, such as solar, wind and water. The composting display provides practical advice on composting, while produce for the centre's restaurant is grown in the lovely and expansive organic gardens. The site also contains buildings constructed from environmentally friendly materials, including a straw-bale theatre and the UK's greenest public building - which boasts compressed earth walls and the UK's largest solar roof.
