Chysauster Ancient Village
Nr. Gulval, Penzance, Cornwall, UK.
Tel. +44 (0) 1831 757934 (summer only)

Chysauster Ancient Village was last inhabited nearly 2000 years ago. It provides an excellent example of life in Cornwall at the time.

Chysauster is known as a ‘courtyard village’ as it consists as a group of stone-built cottages, each with their own courtyard, with rooms and byres surrounding. Nine stone houses stand along each street. Each house is in the region of 27 metres long. A large stone can be seen towards the centre of each house, which was probably used to support the centre point of a thatched roof. The fact that the houses are still standing is testament to the quality and passion of the builders. The site was occupied between 100 BC and 300 AD. It is believed that the village was evacuated at the time of the Roman occupation, and was not lived in since.

There is also a fogou (Cornish for cave) at Chysauster. This underground passage could have provided a hiding place from the Romans, or could have been used to store valuable items, however nobody knows the real reason behind it. In the early 19th Century the village was used as an open-air church for Methodist ministers. English Heritage presently maintains the site.
