Conwy,
North Wales, UK

Conwy Castle Photo Conwy is a medieval walled town situated at the head of the Conwy Valley on the north coast of Wales, above Snowdonia National Park.
It is dominated by its spectacular 13th century castle, one of Edward I's 'Iron Ring' of defensive fortresses, which is now a World Heritage Site.

Bangor grew around a 6th century monastery and is one of Wales' oldest cities. Cosmopolitan in outlook, culturally diverse and strongly Welsh, it is also home to the University of Wales, and becomes packed withConwy Photo students during term time. The university sits on a ridge overlooking the town, and the main building was modelled on Bangor Cathedral, parts of which date back to the 12th century. The cathedral is situated down in the city centre, and was built on the site of the monastic settlement from which the town got its name, 'bangor' meaning 'protective fence'.

Conwy also contains a number of notable buildings. A striking 16th century Elizabethan townhouse known as Plas Mawr ('Great House') is a large, whitewashed structure with elaborate architectural features and furnishings. Aberconwy House is a 14th century medieval merchant's house, the only one in Conwy to have survived, and one of the oldest dwellings in Wales. Less imposing is the 'Smallest House in Britain', measuring only 6ft (wide) by 10ft (high) and situated on Conwy's attractive quayside.
