Conwy Castle Photo Conwy Castle sits on a promontory overlooking the sea on the north coast of Wales and is one of the most impressive of Edward I's 'Iron Ring' of fortresses, dominating the medieval walled town of Conwy.

Beginning in 1283 after Edward I gained control of the Conwy valley, the castle was built under the direction of the famous military architect Master James of St George in just five years. Eight tremendous drum towers and a high curtain wall encase two separate wards, Conwy Castle Photo with additional protection provided by the spectacular town walls. The well preserved 125ft Great Hall lies in the outer ward, while the inner ward houses what were once the sumptuous royal apartments. There is a lovely chapel in one of the towers, and a dungeon in the Prison Tower.

The castle withstood a siege by Madog op Llywelyn in 1295. In 1401 it was taken by Welsh leader Owain Glyndwr after a trick enabled his forces to enter, but was later recaptured by the English during the War of the Roses. The castle now has World Heritage status, and despite having suffered from the ravages of time, its great fortifications are a remarkable sight, with the commanding battlements providing wonderful views across to the mountains of Snowdonia.
