Cornwall is a haven of idyllic sandy white beaches, picturesque villages and harbours, exotic gardens, rugged cliffs and hidden coves, and tranquil countryside.

It is also a popular surfing resort, with Newquay, Cornwall's largest seaside town, boasting the best tourist facilities for surfers and holiday-makers alike. Remember to explore the cobbled streets and fisherman's cottages of the scenic coastal village and artists' colony of St Ives, or take a trip to the seaside resort of Bude, or the charming Cornish port of Fowey - less visited

than the popular ancient fishing village of Polperro. Other towns include Penzance, with its busy promenade and harbour, and Falmouth, surrounded by beaches and cliffs, and home to Cornwall's National Maritime Museum.

The spectacular 200ft granite cliffs of Land's End are situated on Cornwall's southwestern tip, although south of Land's End is the much less touristy Lizard peninsula, a headland of serpentine rock, rare plant life and sheer cliff faces sweeping down to remote beaches. Twenty-eight miles southwest of Land's End are the Isles of Scilly, an archipelago of small islands - mainly uninhabited - which have some of Cornwall's most magnificent unspoilt beaches. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, exotic gardens flourish in Cornwall's mild climate. The famous Eden Project houses a hugely diverse array of plant life within its incredible 'biomes', while Trelissick Garden near Truro has twenty-five acres of woodland walks amid its rhododendrons and palms.
