County Armagh map
County Armagh,
Northen Ireland

Armagh Cathedral Photo Armagh is the smallest county of Northern Ireland, yet its landscape varies from the orchards of the north to the rugged mountains of the south. The region is predominantly Catholic, and has a rich heritage, with many prehistoric and early Christian remains.

The ancient cathedral city of Armagh has been Ireland's spiritual capital for 1500 years, and is the seat of both the Protestant and Catholic archbishops. The city was named after the Celtic Queen Macha, and is famedSouth Armagh Photo for the elegance of its Georgian architecture and its two magnificent cathedrals. Nearby, Navan Fort was once the legendary seat of the kings of Ulster, and is one of the most ancient sites in the country.

The north of Armagh borders Lough Neagh, where the wetlands around the shore form a habitat for masses of birds. The fertile land of the north is also home to the county's famous orchards, along with two interesting stately homes: the Argory, a 19th century mansion, and the 17th century Ardress House. The south of Armagh is a strongly nationalist region, nicknamed 'Bandit Country' due to its notoriety during the Troubles. However, the south is filled with beautiful undulating countryside that offers wonderful opportunities for walking. The Ring of Gullion refers to the foothills surrounding Armagh's highest mountain, and is steeped in Celtic mythology, with an abundance of archaeological remains.
