County Derry map
County Derry,
Northern Ireland

North Derry Coast Photo County Derry lies in the northwest of Northern Ireland, bordering County Antrim to the east and County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland to the west.

The region is named after its main city, Derry, which lies at the foot of Lough Foyle and is the second largest city in Northern Ireland. Filled with history and culture, the city has some of the most intact ancient walls in Europe. The other highlight of County Derry is the glorious coastline of the north, which stretches for miles from the resort of PortstewartDerry Mural Photo in the east along to Magilligan Point further west. Overlooking Ireland's longest beach at Benone Strand is the Downhill Estate, where the Mussenden Temple affords spectacular views of the coast from its position atop a sheer cliff.

Inland are country parks, such as the lovely Roe Valley, and nature reserves. In the southeast corner of Derry is Ireland's largest lake, Lough Neagh, while to the southwest are the forested glens and fertile valleys of the rolling Sperrin Mountains, which offer great opportunities for walking. Also in the south of Derry are the plantation towns of the 17th century, where the old plantation dwellings of Bellaghy Bawn and Springhill provide a fascinating insight into the history of the area.
