County Down, Northern Ireland

County Down lies in the southeastern corner of Northern Ireland and has a wealth of rural charm, particularly around the coast and the Mourne Mountains in the south.

The Mournes are terrific for walking and hiking, and sweep down to a lovely coastline which stretches up to the Ards Peninsula. In the southeast, the Lecale coast has many secluded coves, bays and headlands, as well as a thriving seal population. To the east, lying between the Ards peninsula and the mainland, is Strangford Lough, where birdlife and marine wildlife are abundant.

As well as being ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, Down has many ancient monuments and early remains. St Patrick established his first church at Saul, and is buried at the county town of Downpatrick. Other items of note include the Giant's Ring and Legananny Dolmen, Grey Abbey and Inch Abbey, while impressive stately homes can be found at Castleward and Mount Stewart, while one of the country's best museums is the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, located six miles east of Belfast.
